This wonderful house was built by Mrs. Elizabeth Nelson Smith Atkinson in 1884. She was born February 5, 1817, and married rancher Robert Alexander Atkinson, who was born in 1812 and came to Gonzales from Virginia. Following the death of her husband May 3, 1883, Elizabeth purchased the lot across the street from her son, William Mayo Atkinson. Within a year the construction of her Greek Revival style home was completed.
She died December 16, 1891, and is buried next to her husband in the Gonzales Masonic Cemetery.
