Guadalupe River Floods Twice

In June, the Guadalupe River flooded and crested at 22.70 feet. In July, plans were underway to renovate the Ben Franklin Store on the corner of 401 St. George and turn it into a Mr. Gatti’s Pizza restaurant with thirty employees. Discussions were also being held to promote the proposed Gonzales Civic Center. Later in July, Wuest’s Super Market advertised ground chuck at $1.59 per pound, while Food City at 1600 Sarah DeWitt Drive advertised ground chuck at $1.49 per pound and H.E.B. had a three-pound box of all-beef patties for $2.49. On August 1st, Boysen Food Market at 1020 St. Louis advertised ground beef for $1.69 a pound. On August 15th, the old Guadalupe River Bridge was closed to traffic, and part of the new section of the four-lane bridge was opened for traffic while construction workers dismantled the old bridge. In November, the Guadalupe River flooded again and crested at 28.06 feet. The Ladies First Shop was bought by Mona Bivins and moved from Hwy. 90-A to 616 St Joseph Street. The shop was closed in 2004.
