France and Spain Treaty Medal Discovered

In February, O.E. Monroe discovered a tin medal in excellent condition on his farm located about five miles north of Gonzales on the Luling highway. The medal was found at a depth of seven feet and was later identified to be a memento of the treaty signed between France and Spain on November 7, 1659. The discovery of the medal raised questions about how it ended up on a farm in Gonzales County. On February 4, the Gonzales Motor Company was located at 304 St. Louis Street with Harold McCaskill as the manager. In April, famous actress Joan Blondell visited patients at Warm Springs. In June, T.J. Knight sold his Dry Goods business to the Gindler Brothers (Otto, Bob, and Davis). In August, Wuest’s Grocery opened on the northwest corner of Block 22. The Cole and Remschel Houses were razed to make space for the grocery store. Over the years, it became a Handy-Andy in the 1990s, then the Lone Oak Grocery in 2003, and finally closed its doors in 2008. In 2013, it was converted into a Family Dollar Store. On September 1st, Saint James Catholic Church was razed on Block 46. In October, the Guadalupe River flooded and crested at 34.50 feet. Also in October, the Gindlers Department Store opened in Gonzales on the northwest corner of St. George and St. Joseph (Block 20). It remained in business until 1999.
