East Avenue Elementary School was opened for students from pre-Kindergarten through fifth grade. The property on which it was built had been given back to the City by the State, after serving as a state park. All students were required to have been inoculated against polio before attending. On June 19th, the local paper published an article about the WWI cannon that was located near Fair Street on East Avenue. It was believed to have been manufactured by Krupp in 1918 and was awarded to Gonzales due to the town’s active veterans. A list of the names of the men from Gonzales who served in WWI was rumored to be sealed somewhere in the base of the cannon. In July, the Lions Club completed its barbecue unit at Independence Park. Casa Rio family apartment units opened on Water Street in August, and the Ralston-Purina Company opened its bulk feed installation. In October, the Methodist Church began work on a two-story education building on the east side of the existing church. The sanctuary’s seating/pulpit arrangement was also re-done to face east instead of north. Edwards High School celebrated its 10th annual homecoming in October with Clarice Brasfield and Ernest Porter crowned as king and queen. In November, the Memorial Heights Baptist Church moved into its new sanctuary at 1330 North College Street, with Oscar Thompson as the pastor. Additionally, construction was underway on Dr. Lauraine’s office building at 616 St. Lawrence.
