Eagleford Shale Booms Local Economy

In January, it was reported that the Eagleford Shale had become the world’s largest oil/gas development. In April, the Gonzales Inquirer was named the South Texas Press Association Sweepstakes winner in Division three and received several awards. In May, the Family Dollar Store moved to a new location in an abandoned grocery store building, and a flower shop opened at 616 St. Lawrence Street. In the same month, three new motels opened – Micro-tel Motel, Days Inn & Suites, and Sleep-inn & Suites. August saw the groundbreaking for the new Mohrmann’s Drug Store just west of Memorial Hospital/Clinic, while in October, a new Wal-mart opened at the corner of Sarah DeWitt Drive and Church Street. Finally, in December, the Mike Koch House suffered significant damage after burning for four hours on Sunday morning.
