Courthouse Improvements

On February 5th, the ground was broken for Dr. David Shelby’s new clinic in the 300 block of St. Peter. In March, on the 19th, commissioners voted to remove the stone fence on the south side of the courthouse to allow for more parking. The ornamental iron will either be sold or used for concrete reinforcement, and the stones will be used for rip-rap at bridges. On July 9th, the Sunset Brick and Tile Company was purchased by Herman Becklund of New Orleans and began operations immediately. Later on November 17th, the City Commissioners debated the fate of the dangerously leaning gazebo/bandstand on North Avenue. However, a strong wind finished what the city had begun and tore down the gazebo near City Hall.
