1907, Jacob Stahl House

Detailed Information

Jacob Stahl, son of Solomon and Henrietta Wolfe Stahl, was born in Gonzales, Texas, July 15, 1885. At the age of fourteen, he went into the produce business with his brother, David. They later became partners in the Stahl Brothers’ Store dealing in dry or green hides, furs, poultry, eggs and other groceries. The Stahl family was also heavily involved in raising, buying and selling cotton. Jacob had one of the largest turkey and poultry operations in the southwest. He married Selma Bath of Marshall, Texas, in a ceremony that took place in the Plaza Hotel in Gonzales, June 17, 1906. Selma, the daughter of Morris and Charlotte Herschfeld Bath of Germany, was born in Marshall December 31, 1885. In 1905 Jacob and his brother purchased the lots where the house now stands. Jacob bought David’s interest in 1907 and built this Queen Anne style home where he and Selma lived the remaining years of their lives.

Jacob died November 13, 1941, and Selma died February 22, 1949. They are buried in the Gonzales Jewish Cemetery.
