Independence Square is located downtown, in the heart of Gonzales. It is the primary location for Come & Take It Celebration events, summer concert series, and more.
Local historians found the name was Jail Square prior to the 1835 burning of the city, and, before that, Market Square. After it was Jail Square, it was Confederate Square until a vote to change it in 2021.
The square features a row of historical interpretive panels along a sidewalk, highlighting black history in Gonzales. See more photos of the unveiling event here.
The square is also home to a Confederate Monument, erected in 1910 by the United Daughters of The Confederacy, Chapter 545.
