This beautiful Greek Revival home was built in 1902 by Dr. Jesse Jonathan Fouts. It is constructed of cypress and Florida curly pine from his father’s Florida sawmill. Fouts was born February 11, 1858, in Green Cove Springs, Florida, the son of Martin and Annie Gomillion Fouts, originally from South Carolina. He graduated from Tulane Medical University in 1886 and practiced in New York, Waelder and Galveston before coming to Gonzales in 1890. On September 10, 1893, he married Marie Franke at Black Jack, Fayette County, Texas. Mary, born September 24, 1860, was the daughter of Louis Franke of Germany and Bernadine Ramberg Franke of Fayette County, Texas. Mary was a graduate of the Boston Conservatory of Music and came to Gonzales in 1892 to teach music. On her first Sunday in Gonzales, she and Jesse shared a hymnal in the First Baptist Church choir and the rest is history. They had three sons and one daughter.
Dr. Fouts died January 15, 1936, and Mary moved to Cleburne to live with her daughter. She sold the property in 1942 and died January 21, 1943. Jesse and Mary are buried in the Gonzales Masonic Cemetery.
