1877, Paul Levyson House

Detailed Information

Paul Levyson was born in Pozen, Germany, May 1, 1839. He came to Texas, served with the Confederate army throughout the Civil War and was at Vicksburg when Grant laid siege to that city. On August 4, 1868, he married Fannie Cohn and they had six daughters and one son. Fannie was born in 1850 in Germany and came to the United States with her parents who settled in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Paul and Fannie moved to Gonzales and built this Greek Revival house in 1877. Paul operated a mercantile business here for many years before he retired and moved to San Antonio where, on July 10, 1905, while crossing the street, he was run over by a street car. Fannie died September 27, 1933, in San Antonio.
