Ladybird Johnson Visits Gonzales

In April, Lady Bird Johnson visited Gonzales. You can read the notes from her speech here

On July 19th, Central Ward School was razed – built as a high school in 1889 (architect J. Rieley Gordon), later became an elementary school and finally a part of the junior high.  When it was razed the cornerstone was opened.  Among the items found were a 1894 seated Liberty quarter minted in New Orleans, scraps of an old Inquirer, remains of some cording, and metal piece with the number “2001”, and an emblem with the inscription “K of H”.  According to the December 5, 1889 Inquirer other items were placed in the cornerstone: a copy of the Houston Daily Post; the San Antonio Express; the by-laws of the Masonic Lodge AF and AM No. 30; a copy of a special trades edition of the Inquirer dated November 1, 1889 (the first paper printed by steam, which was printed in Gonzales County on the morning the cornerstone was laid); a badge of the Kings of Honor; a piece of music played for the occasion by the Gonzales Silver Band; an Odd Fellows pin; cards of Mr. & Mrs. T.F. Harwood; a copy of the Gonzales Gazette; and several coins. Engraved on the stone were words that named J.R. Gordon as the architect and H.H. Hunt as the builder.
