On January 2nd, various grocery stores in Gonzales advertised different prices for hamburger meat. Doug’s IGA across from Apache Field sold three pounds for one dollar, Wuest’s sold it for thirty-nine cents a pound, Reaves and Smith’s Meat Market both sold three pounds for a dollar, Toni’s Food Store sold it for thirty-five cents per pound, Boysen Food Market sold it for three pounds for a dollar, and Pagel’s Model Market advertised three pounds for ninety-nine cents.
On January 3rd, Jahnke Jewelry Store moved to a new location at 619 St. Joseph Street. The Jahnke family had previously operated the business at 403 St. George Street for fifty-five years. Mrs. R.P. Jahnke and her daughter Mary currently run the store. On March 14th, Perry Bros., Inc., a variety store located at 517 Saint Joseph Street, was undergoing extensive interior remodeling. On March 15, Ben Franklin, a variety store owned by the Gindler brothers, was scheduled to open at the northeast corner of Saint George and Saint Joseph Streets, possibly by the first of April. On March 28th, Duke & Ayers variety store located at 405 Saint George Street was being remodeled after being in the same location for forty-eight years. Construction of the United States Post Office building began at 920 St. Joseph Street.
