The Daughters of the Republic of Texas were reorganized and chose the Eggleston House as their new project. On February 16th, Major Audie Murphy visited Gonzales during his National Guard Inspection Tour. Irving Forgotston held an open house on March 1st at his newly remodeled insurance offices on 617 St. Paul Street. Whiddon Furniture Store was established on April 1 by Mr. Leslie Whiddon and his son-in-law, Upton Ruddock. W.L. Schultz opened his Sinclair Service Station on April 26 at 727 St. Joseph Street. The air-conditioning for the Methodist Church Sanctuary was near completion on May 10th. On June 14th, the William Tell Lodge, Sons of Herman, dedicated their new building on the Shiner highway. The Louisiana Hayride, featuring George Jones and Johnny Horton, was presented by the Quarterback Club at the ball park at Independence Park on July 12. The first “Come & Take It” celebration was held on October 4. The Old Peck home at 307 Saint Francis Street (Block 21) was razed on October 11th as the Crews Clinic was built around it. Peterek’s new Supermarket opened at 1020 St. Louis. Fritz Heye closed his leather, saddles, harness shop and retired to his home on St. Louis Street on November 22nd. The business was started in 1898 by his brother, D.W. Heye.
